Weather Decision Rules
Clear sky in Val Gardena → do Seceda that day
Partial cloud in Val Gardena → do Alpe di Siusi, save Seceda for clearer day
Bad weather on drive day (Sep 21) → skip Lagazuoi, go straight to Cortina, no regret
Cloudy sunset at Tre Cime → set alarm for 6am, sunrise often clears
Morning fog at Seceda → wait, lifts run all day, fog usually burns off by 10am
Tre Cime (Sep 22) + Croda da Lago (Sep 23) are non-negotiable — rifugios are booked and non-refundable, go regardless of weather
Sunrise beats sunset at Tre Cime — if Sep 22 evening is cloudy, Sep 23 at 6am is your best shot at clear skies
Use Bergfex or MeteoBlue — not Apple Weather or Google. Mountain weather is hyper-local and changes by the hour. Standard apps are useless above 2,000m. Bergfex gives hourly summit forecasts. Aim to be back at the rifugio or car by early afternoon before any weather shift.

Cortina d'Ampezzo · Ampezzano Dolomites
~8 hrs full day 7.9 mi · 1,961 ft gain Hard Near Cortina
One of the most spectacular hikes in the entire Dolomites — and arguably the most rewarding. The loop via Forcella Marcoira (strongly recommended over the standard out-and-back) starts at Passo Tre Croci, just outside Cortina. The destination is a surreal turquoise alpine lake, but the trail itself is full of insane views the entire way. The Forcella Marcoira route adds elevation and scrambling near the top but keeps you away from crowds on 95% of the hike. Rifugio Alfonso Vandelli at the lake for lunch — cash only. Trailhead parking along the road, arrive by 7:30am.

Cortina d'Ampezzo · 3,244m summit
~2–3 hrs total Cable car from town center Easy ~€40pp return
The third highest peak in the Dolomites — and you get there by cable car (Freccia nel Cielo) right from the center of Cortina. A short walk from the top station to the summit with some exposed sections and views that rival anything else on this trip. Barely mentioned on social media despite being extraordinary. Go in the afternoon (3pm) and you'll practically have it to yourself — last cable car down is around 4:50pm. Perfect bolt-on to a Cortina afternoon or to add to Day 4 arrival if you arrive with time. Paid parking on site.
